This is an out and back mountain bike route taking in Cut Gate in the Peak District. It’s a great trail ridden in either direction, by following the route as suggested you don’t miss out on any of the magic offered by this Dark Peak classic ride. Being a classic it gets quite a bit of traffic from both walkers and cyclists so the Park Authority has done a bit of work to maintain the trail. That said the single track is superb, a little testing in places but generally within the abilities of all mountain bikers.
This description starts the edge of Ladybower Reservoir, you could also start from Langsett to the north depending on which way you are entering the Peaks. As it’s an out and back you don’t miss out!
The bridleway begins on the western side of Ladybower heading north up the eastern side the Ladybower Reservoir. There are a few kilometres to cover here as you head past Derwent Reservoir and Cold Side. After that the path swings east and begins to climb. Eventually you will have to carry up a few steps and the only real corner on the whole trip! NOTE: Be careful coming down this bit on the return leg!
Once at the top of the steps you should be able to ride the whole things now, it’s a good path ridable in all but the worst conditions. The trail varies from rock sewn riverbeds to flowing tight singletrack. There a few man-made sections too which are quite testing. After blasting through this section you arrive at a junction on Mickleden Edge (GR: 191985) hang a right here heading north east to North America and Langsett Reservoir.
At the next junction turn left, heading west then take another left at the next junction heading south. There is a bit of climbing to be done to regain your height over some maintained trail before the fun begins again and you are back at the junction of Mickleden Edge.
Now it’s time to come back the way to came and see if you can remember the best lines from earlier in the day! It’s an awesome trail and anybody who can clear the steps at the bottom near Cold Side is The Man/Woman!
It’s a simple cruise back the way you came now with an option of a bit more off road by heading up and east on the side of Ladybower (GR: 187884) for those wanting to extend the day a little.
Great excursion in the Peaks!
