A Wonder Round Grizedale (Black – 30km)

This mountain bike route cuts through the heart of Grizedale Forest and the North Face Trail in the southern Lake District. The day is a mix of wide open trails, tight single track and rocky blasts. The hills aren’t that big but there are plenty of them with lots of rocky outcrops to challenge you both uphill and down! You need to be able to read a map as there is a lot of navigation to be done so this trail is rated black.

Start Point

There are a few options including our new venue (TBC very soon) but the easiest is Hawkshead or the visitors’ centre at Grizedale Forest Park. This route is described from High Wray.

Heading south out of High Wray, you climb on a bridleway up the dirt track through the National Trust property then through the gate on your right and into the Clafie heights. The bridleway is a mix of nice singletrack and forest tracks leading to a tough climb, past some very inviting rocky slabs and into Near Sawrey.

Head west on the road below Estwhaite Water and into Grizdale Forest. Another tough climb now over some rocky outcrops, up a 4×4 track as you make your way over to the Visitors’ Centre. Watch out for walkers and children on the descent.

Hang a left and head south past the visitors’ centre taking the first right. Follow the road up the side and keep going straight on up the rocky path. If you can climb this, you are an Olympian! You keep climbing now as you cross over a few forest tracks and the North Face Trail.

At the fourth junction head turn left heading south then pick up the bridleway heading east. This is a great technical descent so hold on and go for it! Eventually you come out just below Satterthwaite.

Head north and hang a right at the church heading east towards Low Dale Park, another awesome descent.  Go past the houses and follow the track round to the left and climb up through the woods taking a left at the cross roads. After a swift rocky descent you come out in a saw mill yard and then on the road.

Head north on the road and at the bottom of the hill hang a right heading east on the bridleway. On the road head north and into High Cunsey and then Far Sawrey. Pick up the bridleway behind the pub and make your way up the last climb of the day. The final descent is a rocky blast down to Windermere where you skirt the shore back to High Wray.
