This is an epic mountain bike route in the Berwyn Mountains in North Wales. Despite the stunning secanery, the trails see little traffic so you will have them all to yourselves. There is loads of scope for riding round here so the route can be varies as you wish too.
Either Llandrillo or Cynwyd is best, this route is described from Cynwyd where we offer an excellent break for large groups.
The ride starts with a big climb out of Cynwyd from 150m to 600m, it’s all on good track and ridable right to the top. The descent that follows is quite straight forward, bit rocky in places but not really challenging. Last time I was up there I saw an 60 year old guy on his retro bike giving it some, respect! The path also sees a bit of 4×4 traffic so keep an eye out on your way down.
Once you hit the road it’s straight on pass the Pub at Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceriog over the cross roads, up the hill then hang a right at the next cross roads leaving road. Hang another right again heading south west up a bit and then along a ridge until you hit the road again.
Turn left and follow the road down and around to the left at the junction taking the bridleway on your left which traverses under Mynydd Mawr. When back on the road go straight on and follow the road down to the right into Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.
Go straight through the village and begin the next climb which eventually takes you round the northern side of Glen-hafon and to the top of some sweet switchbacks. When you near the bottom bear right and traverse to the road on the bridleway heading for Llangynog.
Last climb of the day now and it’s long, mostly on road with a bit of steep trail at the end to really finish you off. Keep heading north west on the minor road until you eventually top out on the B4391. Cross the road and then there is a short rocky section to climb before you begin to descent.
The descent gets faster and steeper before eventually ending on a river crossing that may catch some of you out. Go through the gate and its a cruise along the road back to base.
Nice ride in stunning scenery which is a little too quite. Enjoy!
