Sarn Helen & Dolwyddelan (Double Black 16km)

This mountain bike route in west Snowdonia is a hard yet very satisfying. The opening climb is steep, loose and rocky and the final descent is spectacular. As it may well involve a bit of pushing it is classed as a double black, don’t be put off though as it’s great fun!

Betws-y-coed or Dolwyddelan are the only two otptions, Betws is the recomended one as it has pubs, cafes & parking galore.

Head north out of Betws and hang a left as the road bends to the right. Go past the unsuitable for vehicle sign and start the walk/climb from hell. Shouldn’t take you took long. before you can ride again and continue to climb. Now just follow your nose and go up and straight and you will eventually hit the brow.

Easy descent that eventually gives way to a road as you whip into Dolwyddelan. Hang a right and go along the road for a about 2.5km before hanging a right onto a very steep road between some houses. This is another serious steep climb, maybe the steepest in the UK? It gives way to a mellower cruise through some nice forest on a dirt track.

Next comes the best bit, wide double rocky track which traverses below Moel Siabod with sweeping views across northen Snowdonia. At the cross road the trail becomes serious with jagged rocks, berms and a few lips to jump off. It’s very fast and a great finish to the day.

Once on the road turn right, then left, right and back to Betws.

Not the biggest day but a good day!
